The North Pine Baptist Church has a wonderful history. I really admire the men and women who faithfully and obediently trusted God by faith to purchase the land here at Ogg Road with the vision of building a church that would serve as a beacon of God’s grace, hope and truth in this local community and further afield. The mission of the church has always been to proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and help people become his mature disciples. For well over 30 years on this site (as well as the many years in Kallangur) the people of this church have sought to faithfully serve Christ and God has blessed us. From humble beginnings God has enabled the church to grow and expand from Kallangur to Ogg Road. What started as a small church building and Sunday school room on this present site, quickly grew to include a larger main auditorium, kitchen, extra Sunday school rooms and a back hall. Over the years the church has grown significantly – God is good!
For the past few years we have consistently seen the main auditorium full on a Sunday morning, to the point where we have had to add seating, but now even this is insufficient to cope. Our youth ministries that run on a Friday night are also beginning to stretch our capacity. What a great ‘problem’ to have!
The challenge, of course, is to provide the space for further ministry growth so that more and more people can come to hear about the gospel of the Lord Jesus and to be nurtured in the faith.
In many ways we are at a crossroads. We can continue to operate as usual with the restricted space but that will mean as our community grows we will not have the facilities to meet that growth. Every church growth expert will tell you that ‘maintenance mode’ (carrying on with the status quo) is the beginning of the end. We either grow or we stagnate and die.
As I was reading Hebrews 11 the other day I was struck by the number of times I read these words… ‘By faith’. “By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain…; By faith Abraham obeyed God when he was called to go to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; by faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; by faith the people crossed the Red Sea; by faith the walls of Jericho fell…“ Throughout history the people of God had been defined by their faith – their trust in, and obedience to, God— willing to take the next step. Will we be like them?
All of these people faced significant challenges when it came to serving God but they all remained faithful and obedient. Right now we face a significant challenge – making room for growth is a costly business. It is going to cost time, effort, energy, money, etc. It is going to take sacrifice on our part and a great deal of faith. BUT, our God is able!
Together it’s time to take ‘the next step’ in the life and ministry of this church. To step out into the future with anticipation and expectation that our God will do amazing things. On Sunday 30th October we will hold a lunch and vision presentation highlighting the amazing possibilities that might await us as a church as we launch out into the future with faith in a wonderful and faithful God. I hope you will be there.
